Families mark the young women’s coming of age on her 15th birthday with a celebration known as a fiesta rosa or quinceañera. The girls wear a pastel princess or bridal-type dress, makeup and a crown. They have courts that resemble bridesmaids in a wedding. Girls receive religious and secular gifts from family and friends.
For Catholics, a Mass is often central to the ceremony. Ceremonies include processions of the court members. During the Mass, the young woman kneels at the altar.
