Jalane Schmidt, associate professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia, gives a lecture at the College of the Holy Cross, October 2, 2017, on "Our Lady of the Slaves: Marian Devotion in Cuba, Race and Revolution." In her talk, Schmidt, who has been doing field research in Cuba for 20 years, explores popular devotion to the Virgin of Charity, Cuba's patron saint, and how she has been represented through history by Cubans of various racial and religious identities.
Schmidt is author of Cachita's Streets: The Virgin of Charity, Race, and Revolution in Cuba (Duke University Press, 2015).
